Biography

Ron Livingston was born on June 5, 1968, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He earned some stage experience with the Williamstown Theatre Festival while attending Yale University, from which he received a B.A. in theater and English literature. He moved to Chicago in 1989 to further his career as a stage actor, and honed his craft at the Goodman Theatre.Livingston landed his first movie part in 1992's Straight Talk, starring Dolly Parton. He relocated to Los Angeles the following year, and picked up supporting roles in indie productions like Some Folks Call it a Sling Blade (1993), a short film starring Billy Bob Thornton, and The Low Life (1995) with Sean Astin and Kyra Sedgwick, as well as a guest role in a 1995 episode of JAG.In 1996, Livingston made his regular series debut in the ABC sitcom Townies, opposite Molly Ringwald, who played his girlfriend on the show. His first big movie break also came that year when he costarred with Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau in the cult comedy classic Swingers. He continued to act in theatrical productions and scored another regular sitcom gig in 1998 on ABC's That's Life, which was quickly canceled.

Livingston was cast as Peter Gibbons, opposite Jennifer Aniston, in the 1999 feature Office Space, a satirical comedy written and directed by Mike Judge. That same year, he padded his resume with big-screen appearances in several indie features, including Two Ninas, Body Shots and The Big Brass Ring, starring William Hurt.In 2001, Livingston landed the part of Captain Lewis Nixon in the Steven Spielberg-produced World War II miniseries Band of Brothers. During that show's run, he also had a recurring role on the ABC legal drama The Practice, playing Assistant D.A. Alan Lowe. His career was definitely on a roll when, in 2002, he was cast as novelist Jack Berger, boyfriend of Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) in the HBO smash series Sex and the City.

While television was helping increase Livingston's profile as an actor during this period, he continued to make appearances on the big screen. He took on the part of smarmy Hollywood agent Marty Bowen in Adaptation (2002), starring Nicolas Cage, and appeared as Larry Sokolov in the Las Vegas-set The Cooler (2003), costarring Alec Baldwin. In 2004, he costarred as two-timer Derek, alongside Brittany Murphy and Holly Hunter, in the romantic comedy Little Black Book.The following year, Livingston appeared in an episode of the hit FOX-TV drama series House, as a high-school teacher in the black comedy Pretty Persuasion, and as a history teacher in the drama Winter Solstice. The actor's screen credits for 2006 include the role of Howard Fornoy in the TNT miniseries Nightmares & Dreamscapes: The End Of The Whole Mess, written by master of horror Stephen King. He also hosted the History Channel documentary Brothers in Arms: The Untold Story of the 502, and returned to a regular TV role on the FOX drama Standoff, in which he plays FBI crisis negotiator Matt Flannery.
